Whooping Cough, Tetanus & Diphtheria (dTpa) Vaccination

Comprehensive protection against three serious bacterial infections in one convenient, single-dose vaccine.

Keeping your immunisations up to date is not just about protecting yourself—it is about creating a safe environment for the most vulnerable members of our community. The dTpa vaccine provides a booster against three severe diseases: Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough).

Because immunity to these diseases naturally fades over time, relying solely on your childhood vaccinations is often not enough. At Moss Vale Community Pharmacy, our trained pharmacists can assess your vaccination history and administer this crucial booster in our private consultation room.

Understanding the Conditions

The dTpa vaccine safeguards your body against three distinct bacterial infections that can cause severe complications.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Whooping cough is a contagious respiratory tract infection. It typically begins with cold-like symptoms before progressing into severe, uncontrollable coughing fits that can end in a high-pitched “whoop” sound as you gasp for air. While exhausting for adults, it is extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening for newborn babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated.

Tetanus

Unlike most vaccine-preventable diseases, tetanus is not caught from other people. The bacteria that cause tetanus live in soil, dust, and manure, and can enter the body through cuts, scratches, or puncture wounds (like stepping on a rusty nail). Tetanus affects the nervous system, causing painful muscle stiffness and spasms, most famously leading to “lockjaw,” which makes it difficult to open the mouth or swallow.

Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a serious, contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. It can produce a thick, grey coating in the back of the throat that makes it difficult to breathe or swallow. Without prompt treatment, the bacteria can produce a toxin that damages the heart, kidneys, and nervous system.

Who Needs a dTpa Booster?

While most Australians receive these vaccines as children, adult boosters are recommended for specific groups to ensure continuous protection.

Expectant Parents & Grandparents

Anyone who will be in close contact with a newborn baby (including parents, grandparents, and carers) should have a booster at least two weeks before coming into contact with the infant to create a “cocoon” of protection.

Pregnant Women

It is highly recommended that women receive a dTpa vaccination during every pregnancy (ideally between 20 and 32 weeks). This passes protective antibodies to the baby, protecting them in their vulnerable first few months of life.

The 10-Year Rule

Immunity to tetanus and whooping cough decreases over time. If you have not had a booster dose in the last 10 years, it is recommended that you update your protection.

Travellers & Outdoor Workers

If you are travelling overseas to areas where medical care is limited, or if you work outdoors where the risk of soil-contaminated cuts (tetanus) is higher, staying up to date is recommended.

Update Your Protection Today
