Injectable or oral vaccination against Salmonella Typhi, recommended for travellers heading to developing countries.
When you travel off the beaten path, experiencing local food and culture is half the fun. Unfortunately, in regions where water treatment and sanitation are still developing, contaminated food and drinking water can expose you to Typhoid Fever.
Typhoid is a severe bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. Symptoms include prolonged high fevers, fatigue, stomach pains, headache, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, it can lead to serious, life-threatening complications. Before you pack your bags, let the vaccination team at Moss Vale Community Pharmacy help you secure your protection.
The Golden Rule of Travel Eating
While the Typhoid vaccine offers excellent protection, it is not 100% effective against every strain of the bacteria. You must combine vaccination with safe eating habits. Remember the golden rule of travel health: “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.” Always drink bottled or purified water, avoid ice in drinks, and stick to hot, freshly cooked foods.
Choosing Your Vaccine: Injectable vs. Oral
We offer two different methods for Typhoid vaccination to suit your medical history, travel timeline, and personal preference.
The Injectable Vaccine (Shot)
This is a single dose given via an injection in the upper arm. It uses an inactivated (dead) portion of the bacteria.
- Provides immunity for approximately 3 years.
- Must be administered at least 2 weeks before travel.
- Ideal for last-minute travellers or individuals who cannot take live vaccines.
The Oral Vaccine (Pills)
This course consists of four capsules taken every other day. It uses a live, attenuated (weakened) form of the bacteria.
- Provides immunity for approximately 5 years.
- Requires strict adherence to the alternating day schedule.
- Capsules must be kept refrigerated and completed at least 1 week before travel.
- A great option for those who want to avoid needles.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Typhoid vaccination is recommended if you are travelling to regions where the disease is endemic, such as South Asia (including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), Southeast Asia, Africa, and parts of Central and South America.
Backpackers & Adventurers
If you are travelling off the standard tourist trail, eating street food, or staying in smaller villages where access to purified water is uncertain, you are at a higher risk of exposure.
Visiting Friends & Relatives
Travellers returning to their country of origin to visit friends or family often stay in local homes and eat traditional home-cooked meals, making them statistically more likely to contract Typhoid.
