Sometimes, things do not go exactly to plan. Whether a condom breaks, you miss a dose of your regular contraceptive pill, or you experience unprotected sex, emergency contraception—commonly known as the morning after pill—is a safe and effective way to help prevent an unplanned pregnancy.

How the Morning After Pill Works

The morning after pill works primarily by delaying or stopping your body from releasing an egg (ovulation). If there is no egg waiting to be fertilised, pregnancy cannot occur. It is important to note that emergency contraception is not the same as an abortion pill; it will not end an existing pregnancy, nor will it affect your future fertility.

There are different types of emergency contraception available over the counter:

• Levonorgestrel (e.g., Postinor, Levonelle): Must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex, though it is most effective within the first 24 hours.
• Ulipristal Acetate (e.g., EllaOne): Can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex and maintains its effectiveness better over that window.

Your pharmacist will ask a few brief, private questions to determine which option is safest and most effective for you, taking into account any other medications you might be taking.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your privacy is our utmost priority. When you arrive, you can ask for the morning after pill at the counter, or simply ask to speak to the pharmacist.

We will invite you into our private consulting room. The pharmacist will ask a few standard health questions to ensure the medicine is safe for you to take. This is also a safe space for you to ask any questions you might have about side effects (like temporary nausea or changes to your next menstrual cycle) or ongoing contraception.

Exploring Everyday Contraception Options

Emergency contraception is highly effective for unexpected situations, but it should not be used as a primary, ongoing method of birth control. If you find yourself needing the morning after pill, it might be a good time to consider whether your current everyday contraception is working for your lifestyle.

There is a wide array of reliable contraceptive options available today, including:

• The Oral Contraceptive Pill: Taken daily. (Note: Under recent NSW health initiatives, our pharmacists can now resupply certain oral contraceptive pills if you meet specific criteria—saving you a trip to the GP).
• Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs): These include hormonal implants (inserted under the skin), hormonal or copper IUDs, and contraceptive injections. LARCs are highly effective and offer “set and forget” convenience.
• Barrier Methods: Condoms remain the only contraceptive method that also protects against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
• Vaginal Rings: A flexible ring placed inside the vagina that releases hormones over several weeks.
