As we move through the final weeks of winter in the Southern Highlands, our community is experiencing a significant and sustained wave of respiratory illnesses. In particular, we are seeing a sharp local increase in cases of both Influenza (the flu) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
While colds and coughs are expected this time of year, both the flu and RSV can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Here is what you need to know about the current outbreak, how to tell these viruses apart, and how Moss Vale Community Pharmacy can help you and your family manage symptoms safely.
Is it the Flu, RSV, or Just a Cold?
Because these viruses share many overlapping symptoms—such as a runny nose, cough, and fever—it can be incredibly difficult to tell them apart without a test. However, the way they develop and who they hit the hardest can provide some clues.
Influenza (The Flu)
- Onset: Hits very suddenly. You may feel fine in the morning and completely bedridden by the afternoon.
- Symptoms: High fever, severe muscle and joint aches, chills, deep fatigue, and a dry cough.
- Impact: Makes adults and older children feel profoundly unwell; carries a high risk of secondary infections like pneumonia.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
- Onset: Tends to develop more gradually over a few days, starting like a normal cold.
- Symptoms: Runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, and in severe cases, wheezing.
- Impact: Very dangerous for infants under 12 months (can cause bronchiolitis) and adults over 60.

Please avoid visiting aged care facilities, hospitals, or families with newborn babies until you are completely symptom-free. A Note on Antibiotics
Remember that Influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 are viruses. Antibiotics only kill bacteria and will not cure a viral infection. The best treatment is rest, hydration, and targeted symptom relief. However, if your doctor suspects a secondary bacterial infection (like a chest infection), they may prescribe antibiotics.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Care
If you or your child experience severe difficulty breathing, rapid or shallow breathing, chest pain, a bluish tint to the lips or face, or confusion/inability to wake up, this is a medical emergency. Call 000 or present to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.
