When contracted later in life, chickenpox frequently leads to more severe symptoms and carries a significantly higher risk of complications, such as viral pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). It’s Not Just a “Childhood” Disease
If you did not catch chickenpox as a child and you missed out on routine school vaccinations, you remain susceptible to the virus. The Vaccination
The varicella vaccine is a live-attenuated (weakened) vaccine that is highly effective at preventing the disease. For individuals aged 14 years and older who require catch-up vaccination, a standard course involves two doses administered at least 4 to 8 weeks apart.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Catch-up vaccination is strongly recommended by the Australian Immunisation Handbook for any non-immune adolescent or adult, especially those in the following groups:

Anyone who has never had a confirmed case of chickenpox or lacks a documented record of vaccination. If you are unsure of your immunity, a simple blood test arranged by your GP can confirm your status.
🩺 Healthcare & Care Workers
Nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, childcare workers, and aged care staff who are at high risk of exposure or who work with vulnerable individuals.
🤰 Women Planning Pregnancy
Chickenpox during pregnancy can cause severe complications for both mother and baby. Women should ensure they are immune before trying to conceive (pregnancy must be avoided for 28 days after receiving the vaccine).
✈️ International Travellers
Non-immune individuals travelling to regions where chickenpox is prevalent and routine childhood vaccination programs are not established.
