Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is a rare but potentially severe infection transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Historically considered a risk only for those travelling to parts of Asia, recent outbreaks have seen the virus become a significant health concern in regional and rural Australia.
While most people infected with JEV experience no symptoms or only a mild fever, a small percentage can develop severe encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Because there is no specific treatment or cure for the virus once contracted, vaccination is the most effective way to protect those living, working, or travelling in high-risk areas.
How JEV Spreads
You cannot catch JEV directly from another person, nor can you catch it from eating pork. The virus is maintained in a cycle between mosquitoes and certain animals—most notably pigs and waterbirds. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it can then transmit the flavivirus to a human through its next bite.
Understanding the Risks and the Vaccine
The Threat of Encephalitis
In severe cases, JEV can cause sudden onset of high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, and seizures. This severe form of the disease is a medical emergency and can lead to permanent neurological complications or death.
The Vaccination
The JEV vaccine is effective at preventing infection. Depending on your age and medical history, it is usually administered as a single dose (for the live-attenuated version) or a two-dose primary course (for the inactivated version).
Who Should Be Vaccinated?
Following recent outbreaks in Australia, health authorities strongly recommend the JEV vaccine for individuals who have a high occupational or environmental risk of mosquito exposure.
🐖 Piggery & Abattoir Workers
Because pigs are amplifying hosts for the virus, anyone who works at, lives on, or frequently visits a piggery, pork abattoir, or pork rendering plant is considered at very high risk and should be vaccinated.
🌾 Regional Residents & Workers
People living or working in regional areas who spend significant time outdoors (such as agricultural workers, environmental officers, or campers) near significant mosquito populations or waterways where waterbirds gather.
✈️ International Travellers
Travellers spending a month or more in endemic areas of Asia, the Torres Strait, or Papua New Guinea—especially those venturing into rural or agricultural areas during the wet season—should be immunised before departure.

Veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory workers who may be exposed to the virus or handle specimens from potentially infected animals.
