Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) boosters for healthcare personnel, laboratory workers, and travellers to endemic regions.

Thanks to widespread childhood vaccination, Australia was declared polio-free over two decades ago. However, Poliomyelitis remains a highly infectious viral disease that is still endemic in certain parts of the world, posing a continued threat to travellers and specific high-risk workers.

Because the virus can invade the nervous system and cause irreversible paralysis in a matter of hours, maintaining immunity is recommended if you are entering an environment where exposure is possible. At Moss Vale Community Pharmacy, our immunising pharmacists can safely administer the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) to ensure your protection is completely up to date.

How Does Polio Spread?

The polio virus is contagious and spreads primarily from person to person, usually through the fecal-oral route or, less frequently, through contaminated food and water. This makes rigorous hand hygiene and up-to-date vaccinations the only effective methods of prevention.

Understanding the IPV Booster

Most Australian adults received their primary polio vaccinations as infants and children. While this provides excellent long-term immunity for everyday life, it is not always enough for high-exposure situations.

The Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV)

The vaccine used in Australia is inactivated, meaning it contains killed virus particles. It cannot cause polio. It safely prompts your immune system to produce antibodies, rapidly boosting your defenses against all three types of the poliovirus.

Why Do I Need a Booster?

Adults who have completed a routine series of polio vaccines during childhood but are now travelling to high-risk areas or working in specific healthcare or laboratory settings should receive a single lifetime IPV booster dose to reinforce their immunity.

Who Needs an IPV Booster?

A single booster dose is strongly recommended for fully vaccinated adults who fall into any of the following high-risk categories:

✈️ Travellers to Endemic Regions

If you are travelling to countries where polio is still endemic (such as Pakistan or Afghanistan) or regions currently experiencing outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus, an IPV booster is recommended before you depart.

🩺 Healthcare Personnel

Medical professionals, nurses, and allied health workers who may be treating or coming into close contact with patients who have suspected or confirmed polio infections.

🔬 Laboratory Workers

Personnel who handle specimens that may contain polioviruses are at a significant occupational risk and must ensure their immunity is boosted.

💉 Unvaccinated Adults

Adults who are unvaccinated, incompletely vaccinated, or whose childhood vaccination status is entirely unknown should consult with our pharmacists about completing a full primary course of IPV.
