Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common group of viruses that affect the skin and mucous membranes. In fact, it is so common that almost every sexually active adult will contract at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives. While many strains clear up on their own without causing symptoms, others pose a significant, long-term threat.
The modern HPV vaccine provides a powerful defence against the high-risk oncogenic (cancer-causing) strains of the virus. The Link to Cancer

Targeted Protection
The current vaccine available in Australia protects against nine major types of HPV. This includes the high-risk types that cause up to 90% of cervical cancers, as well as the types that cause over 90% of genital warts.
When Should You Get It?
The vaccine is most effective when given before a person becomes sexually active and is exposed to the virus. However, adults who have already been sexually active can still greatly benefit, as the vaccine protects against strains they may not have encountered yet.
Who Can Benefit from Vaccination?
While the HPV vaccine is routinely given to adolescents through school-based vaccination programs, catch-up doses and adult vaccinations are highly encouraged for several groups.
Young Adults (Catch-up)
If you missed your HPV vaccination at school, catch-up programs are often available. Young adults under the age of 26 should speak to our pharmacists to check their eligibility for free catch-up doses.
Adults up to Age 45
Even if you are older than 26, the vaccine may still offer valuable protection. Discuss your lifestyle and potential benefits with your GP or our pharmacy team to see if a private vaccination is right for you.
Immunocompromised Individuals
People with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of persistent HPV infections and rapidly developing HPV-related cancers, making vaccination especially important.
High-Risk Groups
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at a significantly higher risk of certain HPV-related diseases, such as anal cancer, and are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated.
