If you ever had chickenpox as a child, the virus that caused it never actually left your body. Instead, it retreated deep into your nervous system, where it lies dormant. Years—often decades—later, this virus can unexpectedly “wake up” and reactivate as Shingles.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is notoriously painful. It typically presents as a blistering rash that wraps like a band around one side of the torso, face, or neck. Because our immune systems naturally weaken as we age, the risk of developing Shingles increases significantly once we pass 50. Fortunately, modern vaccines offer powerful, long-lasting protection against both the rash and its lingering complications.
The Hidden Risk: Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN)
While the Shingles rash itself usually clears up within a few weeks, the real danger is a complication called Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN). PHN causes severe, debilitating nerve pain in the area where the rash was, which can persist for months or even years. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent this lasting pain.
Understanding the Vaccine
The modern Shingles vaccine available in Australia is highly effective, but it does require a specific dosing schedule to ensure maximum protection.
The Vaccination Course
- Two Doses: The vaccine is administered as a two-dose course.
- Spacing: The second dose is typically given 2 to 6 months after the first dose.
- Long-Lasting: Once you complete the two-dose course, you generally do not need a booster later in life.
“But I’ve already had Shingles!”
- You can—and should—still get vaccinated even if you have had an episode of Shingles in the past.
- The virus can reactivate more than once, and the vaccine helps prevent future outbreaks.
- You must wait until your current Shingles rash has completely cleared before receiving the vaccine.
Eligibility and Funding
At Moss Vale Community Pharmacy, our accredited immunising pharmacists can safely administer the Shingles vaccine in our private consultation room. Depending on your age and health status, you may be eligible to receive this vaccine for free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
Adults Aged 65 and Over
The Shingles vaccine is government-funded (free) for all Australians aged 65 years and older to protect this highly vulnerable age bracket.
First Nations People
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over are eligible for the free, government-funded vaccine.
Immunocompromised Adults
Adults aged 18 years and over with specific underlying medical conditions that severely weaken the immune system are also eligible for the funded vaccine.
Private Vaccination
If you do not meet the criteria for the government-funded program but are over the age of 50 and wish to protect yourself, the vaccine is available to purchase privately.
