Expert Wound Care and Management
Professional assessment, cleaning, and dressing to help your skin heal safely and efficiently.
Every wound—whether it is a minor scrape, a kitchen burn, a post-surgical incision, or a persistent ulcer—requires the right environment to heal correctly. While it can be tempting to simply apply a standard sticking plaster at home, using the incorrect dressing or failing to identify early signs of infection can significantly delay healing and lead to unnecessary complications.
At Moss Vale Community Pharmacy, our trained pharmacists provide a dedicated, accessible wound management service. We take the guesswork out of first aid, ensuring your wound receives the specific care it needs for optimal recovery.

The science of wound care has advanced significantly in recent years. We now know that wounds heal best in a carefully managed, moist environment, rather than being left to “dry out and scab over” as was traditionally thought.
Our professional pharmacy team can help by:
- Selecting the Right Dressing: There are hundreds of dressings available—from simple islands to advanced foams, alginates, and hydrogels. We match the dressing to your wound’s specific exudate (fluid) level, size, and location.
- Preventing Infection: We use sterile techniques and can recommend the appropriate antimicrobial washes or medical-grade honeys if your wound is at risk.
- Promoting Comfort: The right dressing reduces pain, prevents the bandage from sticking to the healing tissue, and protects the delicate new skin underneath.
Types of Wounds We Help Manage
Our pharmacists are equipped to assess and dress a wide variety of common injuries, including: minor cuts and abrasions, superficial burns and scalds, skin tears (particularly common in older adults), blisters, minor surgical wounds (like stitch or staple removals, with a doctor’s referral), and minor leg ulcers.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your comfort and privacy are our top priorities. When you visit us for wound care, the process is straightforward:
- Assessment: In our private consulting room, the pharmacist will gently examine the wound to determine its type, depth, and whether any signs of infection are present.
- Cleaning: The wound will be carefully cleaned using appropriate saline or antimicrobial solutions to remove debris and bacteria.
- Dressing: A tailored dressing will be applied to optimize the healing environment.
- Ongoing Advice: We will provide you with clear instructions on how to care for the dressing at home, when you should return for a dressing change, and what warning signs to monitor.
When to See a Doctor Immediately
While we can manage many wounds in the pharmacy, some require urgent medical attention. You should see a GP or visit the emergency department if: the wound is deep, gaping, or exposes fat or muscle; it is bleeding heavily and will not stop with pressure; it is the result of a deep puncture or an animal bite; or if you notice severe signs of infection, such as spreading red streaks, worsening pain, foul odour, or if you develop a fever.
