Flu Vaccine: Protect Yourself This Year
Your pharmacist makes staying up-to-date with your annual influenza vaccination safe, quick, and convenient.
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is not just a bad cold. It is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe health complications, hospitalisation, and even death. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), thousands of Australians are hospitalised every year due to the flu and its associated complications. While the peak season typically runs from June to September, the flu virus circulates year-round.
The most effective way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the broader Southern Highlands community is by receiving a seasonal influenza vaccination. Because the flu virus constantly mutates, and because the immunity provided by the vaccine wanes over time, an annual booster is critical to maintaining a strong defence.
Why Do I Need a Flu Vaccine Every Year?
You might wonder why you need a flu shot annually when many other vaccines provide decades of protection. The answer lies in the nature of the influenza virus. The virus strains circulating in the community are constantly changing and adapting. Each year, global health authorities monitor these shifts and update the flu vaccine formulation to match the strains most likely to cause illness in the upcoming season.
Additionally, the protective antibodies your immune system produces in response to the vaccine decline over time. Getting vaccinated annually ensures your immune system has the most current “blueprint” of the virus and is primed to fight it off effectively.
The Herd Immunity Effect
When you get vaccinated against the flu, you aren’t just protecting yourself. You are also helping to protect the vulnerable members of our community—such as young infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems—who may not be able to mount a strong immune response themselves. This collective protection is known as herd immunity.
Is It a Cold or the Flu?
It can be difficult to tell the difference between a common cold and the flu, as they share many symptoms. However, the flu is generally much more severe and comes on much more suddenly.
The Common Cold
- Symptoms develop gradually over a few days
- Usually mild fatigue and weakness
- Runny or stuffy nose is very common
- Sneezing and a sore throat are typical
- Fever is rare in adults (though possible in children)
- Usually resolves within a week without complications
Influenza (The Flu)
- Symptoms appear abruptly and intensely
- Severe exhaustion, fatigue, and muscle aches
- High fever and chills are very common
- Dry, chesty cough that can become severe
- Headaches are frequent and often strong
- Can lead to complications like pneumonia or bronchitis
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
In Australia, the annual influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and older. However, it is particularly crucial for individuals who are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from the flu.
High-Risk Groups
Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), free flu vaccines are available for specific vulnerable groups, including:
- Adults aged 65 years and over (who receive an enhanced vaccine designed specifically to boost their immune response).
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over.
- Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy (protecting both the mother and the baby for their first few months of life).
- Children aged six months to under five years.
- People aged six months and over with specific chronic medical conditions, such as severe asthma, heart disease, diabetes, or immunocompromising conditions.
Can the Vaccine Give Me the Flu?
This is a common myth, but the answer is no. The influenza vaccines administered by pharmacists in Australia are inactivated (they do not contain any live virus). Therefore, it is biologically impossible to catch the flu from the vaccine. Some people may experience mild side effects, such as a sore arm, low-grade fever, or tiredness for a day or two as their immune system responds to the vaccine, but this is not the flu itself.
