Absence from Work Certificates

Fast, accessible documentation for minor illnesses and carer’s leave, right here at your local pharmacy.

When you are struck down by a sudden cold, a migraine, or a seasonal virus, the last thing you want to do is sit in a crowded medical clinic waiting room just to secure a sick note for your employer. Under the Australian Fair Work Act 2009, registered pharmacists are legally authorised to issue Absence from Work Certificates, providing a highly convenient alternative for workers experiencing minor ailments.

At Moss Vale Community Pharmacy, our trained pharmacists can assess your condition in a private consultation room and issue a formal certificate to validate your personal sick leave or carer’s leave. This service is designed to alleviate the burden on local GPs in the Southern Highlands while ensuring you get the rest and documentation you need.

What We Can Issue Certificates For

Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals, but our scope of practice regarding medical certificates is strictly defined. We can only issue certificates for conditions that are within our professional competence to assess.

Conditions We CAN Cover

Minor, self-limiting ailments that generally do not require a doctor’s diagnosis, such as:

  • Common colds and mild flu symptoms
  • Gastroenteritis (stomach bugs)
  • Mild migraines and severe headaches
  • Hay fever and severe allergies
  • Minor injuries (e.g., mild sprains)
  • Period pain (dysmenorrhea)

Conditions We CANNOT Cover

We are unable to issue certificates for complex or severe conditions, including:

  • Pregnancy-related complications
  • Conditions requiring ongoing GP management
  • Workers’ compensation claims
  • Return to work clearances following major illness
  • Conditions lasting longer than a few days

Who Can Request a Certificate?

We can provide certificates for two distinct types of leave under the National Employment Standards:

  • Personal Sick Leave: If you are personally unwell or injured and unable to attend work.
  • Carer’s Leave: If you need to take time off to provide care or support to a member of your immediate family or household who requires care due to a personal illness, injury, or unexpected emergency.

Important Documentation Requirements

You must attend the pharmacy in person to be assessed. If you are requesting a certificate for carer’s leave, the person who is unwell (e.g., your child or partner) must be present for the pharmacist to assess them. We require a valid form of photo identification (such as a Driver’s Licence) to complete the paperwork.

How the Assessment Process Works

Getting a certificate at Moss Vale Community Pharmacy is a straightforward and professional process:

  1. Book or Walk In: Use the MedAdvisor link above to book a time, or simply walk in and speak to our pharmacy staff.
  2. Private Consultation: You will be shown to our private consultation room where the pharmacist will ask you a series of clinical questions about your symptoms, their duration, and any medicines you are taking.
  3. Assessment: The pharmacist will determine if your condition falls within their scope of practice. They may also check your temperature or blood pressure if clinically relevant.
  4. Treatment Advice: In addition to the certificate, the pharmacist will provide expert advice on managing your symptoms and recommend appropriate over-the-counter medicines to help you recover.
  5. Issuing the Certificate: If appropriate, a formal, signed document will be issued to you. Please note that a standard consultation fee applies for this service, which is not covered by Medicare.

Limitations of Pharmacy Certificates

By law, a pharmacist cannot backdate a medical certificate. The certificate will only cover the day of the consultation and, depending on the pharmacist’s clinical judgement, up to two days moving forward. If you require an extended period of leave, you will need to see your General Practitioner.
